Dear Sirs,

The annual international meeting of experts on water supply, sewage and wastewater treatment of the Croatian Water and Wastewater Group with international participation will take place from 23rd to 27th October at the Elaphusa Hotel in Bol on the island of Brač. We are continuing a highly successful series of conferences bringing together experts from Central and Southern Europe who are involved in water supply, sewage and wastewater treatment. Therefore, we invite you to participate in one of the most important water management events in this part of Europe.
This expert and business meeting traditionally takes place under the familiar name:
CURRENT ISSUES IN WATER SUPPLY AND SEWAGE

The annual meeting of the Croatian Water and Wastewater Group has recognized this event as the most important event of the year, bringing together experts in water management from many European countries. Thus, this conference is the meeting place for the exchange of knowledge and experience of private individuals, companies and institutions. From year to year, we witness a growing interest in this meeting, which, by current estimates, will number 600 to 700 participants this year.

Significant is also the great interest of the authors of the technical papers, both from Croatia and abroad, who share their experiences and achievements in their presentations at the Conference. This provides a basis for a high-quality professional exchange of experiences between the technical contributors and their counterparts in public institutions, with the aim of informing each other about new developments in all areas of water management, new developments as well as problems encountered in the field of water supply, sewage and wastewater treatment.

In addition to the presentations of technical papers, this year's expert meeting will also offer other activities in the form of a varied supporting programme, including the display of equipment and the presentation of services. We know from experience that our thematic workshops are very well attended, which is not surprising, as here the latest developments are presented in a pleasant atmosphere and useful discussions on current problem areas abound.

The exchange of contacts and experience in the field of the management of water companies is also of great importance - the purpose thereof is to improve and promote the business activities of those companies who are the carriers of development in their home environment.

Current situation in the field of water supply, sewage and wastewater treatment in Croatia is marked by numerous activities which are improving the performance of the entire water sector and increasing the quality of service to the end users - the purpose here is to ensure that the objectives and commitments which Croatia took on as a full member of the European Union are being met. We recognize that with Croatia’s accession to the European Union a significant number of water infrastructure projects have been introduced, although we still observe serious problems in their implementation. This can ultimately lead to a slowing down of a number of projects which will affect the efficiency of the EU Directives. The Conference is designed to address these issues, as well as cater to the interests of the profession and the general public. Its ultimate goal is to start and implement as many significant projects as possible, directly related to growth and development and affecting the development of the society in general.

Through a variety of laws and regulations, the legal framework has a large influence on the preparation and implementation of many investment projects, thus affecting the performance of operators and water suppliers in the Republic of Croatia. One of the key areas for the operation of public water utilities in the country is the reform of the water sector, which is already under way, but it is only in the near future that a whole range of activities is expected to substantially reform the entire sector.

Plan

From all of the above, we expect a wide range of expert issues to be addressed during the Conference, through presentations grouped by subject areas, thematic workshops, meetings and discussions with numerous active participants. Thematic roundtables will be organized as key events during the Conference, with the aim of taking a closer look at some of the current topics in the water sector. The discussions will be attended by recognized experts from the field, as well as representatives of direct participants in the processes of implementing water supply projects.

We plan to divide the entire official part of the programme with technical presentations into thematic units, which will also serve as a classification criterion for the papers received. Although most papers will fall into the specific disciplines, listed below, we encourage also those papers which may be outside of the given framework but which relate to the issues of water management.

Thematic units

The foreseen thematic units at this year's meeting, which are only a guide for the authors of the technical papers, are as follows:

  1. PROBLEMS IN PREPARING AND IMPLEMENTING EU PROJECTS
  2. TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF LOSSES IN WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS
  3. REMOTE READING OF WATER CONSUMPTION
  4. SLUDGE PROCESSING AND TREATMENT IN WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANTS
  5. QUALITY AND TREATMENT OF DRINKING WATER AND WASTEWATER QUALITY
Note from the organizing committee

We believe that the above-mentioned agenda will attract the interest of both individuals and companies in preparing presentations, as well as lectures on the above-mentioned subject areas. We hereby invite interested authors to enrich the programme agenda with their participation and thus contribute to the further development of the given topics.

We therefore cordially invite the participation of representatives of public water companies, university professors and lecturers, heads of ministries, departments and Hrvatske vode, planners, architects, engineers, manufacturers and distributors of equipment and installations, institutes and inspection bureaus. This highly competent profile of participants is expected to offer its contribution to the above agenda, thus enhancing the overall exchange of knowledge, ideas and information in this field.
